I will just introduce about Laksha.
Laksha,(as well known lac / lacquer) work can be described as the most attractive and unique of Sri Lankan handicrafts.
These skillfully made traditional handicrafts are a very popular choice amongst tourists and seekers of tokens depicting Sri Lankan culture. Originating in central part of Sri Lanka, the knowledge of lacquer making has spread throughout the island over the centuries.
The base product for the traditional lacquerware is a wax derived from a species of insects, which is imported from India. Whilst the age-old methods are used by some, new tools and procedures introduced with time are preferred by the others in the making of these complex and exquisite designs.
Laksha artists are producing their crafts amidst a lot of hard work. They have a great deal of respect and devotion to this traditional craft for the production of high-quality goods. It is a privilege to bring this craft to the present amid various difficulties. This industry, which has been preserved from generation to generation since the days of kings, has today become an art form in which a minimal community is engaged. It would be invaluable if a program could be put in place that would encourage those involved in the industry to preserve such heritage for the future.
